Sydney overview

With its glitzy and iconic cityscapes and mix of modern architecture, Sydney is very much a youthful city. National parks ring and penetrate the cityscape, allowing Australia's wealth of spectacular fauna and flora to mingle amongst its urbanites. Crowned by its world famous harbour, with the Sydney Opera House, a lively seafood scene gives way to hip parties after dark as the great and good of the city gather to mingle. Make like a local and sunbathe on Bondi Beach, climb up to the Sydney Observatory or take in the variety of animals and birds at the Taronga Zoo. Replete with museums and a huge Chinatown, Sydney is a world class city that's well worth exploring. With flights to Sydney (including business class flights to Sydney) from London (with stopovers in Asia) recently decreasing in price, it's becoming more and more accessible to British tourists.

As a major international hub, Sydney offers a wealth of accommodation options, including B&Bs and quirky guesthouses, home rentals and classic and contemporary hotels of all shapes and sizes. Flights to Sydney from Heathrow can be combined with surprisingly affordable accommodation to suit all tastes.

Best time to visit Sydney

The best times to fly to Sydney are when the seasons are changing (between September and November and from March to May). These times offer more moderate, comfortable temperatures and manageable tourist crowds by avoiding the school holiday peaks. Airline prices fall during these shoulder seasons, making them a more affordable time to visit.

As a city that loves to party, there's something to see pretty much all year round. See the world's best surfers take to the waves at Bondi Beach for the Australian Open of Surfing in late February. There's the vibrant Sydney Mardi Gras in early March - a riot of colour and performance on the streets. From March to April every year the Sydney Carnival is held, celebrating thoroughbred horse racing in style. Around Easter, there's the Royal Easter Show and Sydney Easter Parade that attract thousands of visitors of all ages. Vivid Sydney in May and June lights up the city's landmarks, transforming the city into a living artwork with plenty of events and fireworks to enjoy. October is Good Food Month, where the city's swanky restaurants and street food scene opens up to huge crowds. Start searching for cheap flights from the UK to Sydney now on Travel Trolley.
