Senegal Overview

From great beaches to incredible wildlife, from cultural stimulation to colonial brush, from vibrant markets to vivacious nightlife... Senegal has it all! It is the undoubtedly the biggest holiday wonder waiting for tourists in West Africa. The former French colony has more than its official language to let you know of its past. There are spectacular traces of colonial architecture all over the country, with St. Louis being perhaps the torch bearer of all. The place is equally well known for its wildlife and beaches, which many believe to be the best in the region. And of course, being an African country, you would expect Senegal to have a great music scene!

Top Destinations in Senegal

For many, Senegal is West Africa's most pleasant holiday destination, with many twists and turns in store for tourists. Senegal's capital city, Dakar is a modern city that portrays a fine fusion of colonial architecture and contemporary structures. St. Louis is the former capital of the country and a trip here is more of an introduction with the French colonial architecture, balconies and verandas more than anything else. For beach lovers on Senegal tour, a trip to Casamance is sine qua non, with this being the place where some of the finest beaches of the continent are found. Parc National de Niokolo Koba is for wildlife lovers as the place teems with all sorts of mammals. Goree Island is another one with colonial history appended to it.

Flight Tickets to Senegal

Senegal may not be one of the world's most well connected aviation hubs, but there are enough international flight services being run to the country's main airport, Leopold Sedar Senghor International Airport from different key centres of the globe. Europe's busiest airport, London Heathrow has several operators running flights to Senegal. Some of the key players are Ethiopian Airlines, British Airways, Air France, Emirates and American Airlines. Most of the services being offered are indirect/connecting flights with Paris' Charles De Gaulle Airport being one of the most popular layovers. From other airports of the UK very few flights are available to Dakar.

Best Time to Visit Senegal

Most travel experts concur that the best time to visit Senegal is between November and March when the climatic conditions are drier and relatively cooler. Beach lovers would be greeted with clear waters and perfect diving and swimming conditions. It is the also the most opportune time for the bird watchers as flocks of migratory birds arrive in Senegal during the period. Naturally, it is the peak holiday season in Senegal, with shortage of cheap flight tickets and scarcity of affordable holiday packages, in general. May to November is the wet period, with humid weather and tricky road conditions. Tourists must avoid this season, unless their only concern is cheap tickets to Senegal.
